KRFC MusicShare: Post Paradise

It can be hard for a band to distinguish themselves a town full of musical talent like Fort Collins. Some artists fall into the trap of believing that ability alone will open every door to the top. They become disgruntled at the wonderful community around them that actually just wants them to see them happy and working. Fortunately for Post Paradise, their positivity, professionalism and work ethic have kept them on the straight and narrow path to acclaim. On top of recording and performing, they work on their own skills and even do some teaching. They also take initiative to enhance their own live shows with immersive lighting design; and by all accounts they are a breeze to book and work with.

For these reasons, and for their uniquely Colorado sound, we’re thrilled to share a download from their May 18, 2013 sophomore release, “Digging Secrets.” This is the band’s first recording with their new rhythm section. The quartet recorded the “Digging Secrets” this January at Fort Collins’ legendary recording studio, The Blasting Room, with engineer Chris Beeble, who was also tasked with mastering the album’s 10 tracks in February. After a number of showcases at SXSW, the band is back on the front range and ready to release their latest opus May 18th at Hodi’s Halfnote with Shatterproof and Rachel and Kings. KRFC MusicShare: Sour Boy, Bitter Girl

Libi Rose is not a member of Sour Boy, Bitter Girl – or any band to my knowledge – but you cannot discount her contribution the band’s latest release. The album is great and worth a buy, but video is still killing the radio star, so it’s wise that they snatched Rose up to create the video before she departs for graduate studies in experimental documentary arts and computational media at Duke University’s prestigious AMI program. There are more than a few creatives who will miss her deeply around Fort Collins even while we look forward to her achievements and accolades yet garnered. Fortunately this video collaboration exists as fodder for our nostalgia. Enjoy it and get the download below.

Podcast: Kate Graves and Jami Lunde on KRFC 88.9FM Live@Lunch | One Hour LIVE On-Air Performance/Interview

Kate Graves

Kate Graves writes little songs.. Sometimes they are sparse…sometimes filled with lots of little words.  Often they are written about things like tasting sweet orange  on your lips and wanting to kiss someone so that they might experience tasting sweet orange on their lips.

Kate Graves likes kissing. And singing.  She hopes you will listen in and sing along.”

Kate joins us in the studio with Colorado’s own Jami Lunde & Jamie Mitchell.

KRFC MusicShare: Winchester Holiday feat. Benny P (Whensday Soundtrack)

Technology and production talent are two of the major behind-the-scenes factors setting Colorado music apart and above the fray. Today’s KRFC MusicShare track has a one year journey that highlights many of the finest points of our music community on the way to a very happy ending (A FoCoMA Peer Award for both band and recording studio).

Let’s briefly run through the story then get right to the track.

A group of artists and producers come together to create a local feature film showcasing Fort Collins.

Seeking music from their friends and community, producers listened to a Winchester Holiday demo recording and subsequently gained permission to edit one of their songs for the movie soundtrack.

Needing production expertise to transform the demo into a fully-produced motion picture quality recording, producer Ben Mozer teamed with local musician, band-leader and producer Ben Prytherch to do the work.

To finish the recording, Ben Prytherch turned over the tracks to Stout Studios where Darren Radach completed the mastering process.

The resulting version of the song moved producers to feature it in their teaser trailer, released the week of the 2013 Fort Collins Musicians Association’s Peer Awards where Winchester Holiday took home “Best New Band” and Stout Studios took home “Best Studio.”

The feature film, Whensday, hits Fort Collins August 9th. Two tracks from the original soundtrack are available now via the movie’s Facebook or Bandcamp pages.

KRFC MusicShare: Cary Morin

Once again this April we find ourselves blanketed in snow. Fortunately local singer/songwriter, Cary Morin, has an old guitar he can’t put down and that means a hot blues tune this week to ward away any frosty dispositions that may try to draft under your door.

Earlier this year Cary Morin successfully Kickstarted (fan-funded) a new album, “Streamline” set to release this Spring and streaming now at CaryMorin.com. The project was recorded in Fort Collins by Shaped Music and mixed/mastered at Air Show Mastering in Boulder, Colorado by James Tuttle.

“Streamline” is a totally acoustic solo recording. The tracks are live start to finish and there are no overdubs or computer magic to enhance the tracks. Although it is Cary Morin’s solo performance, the creation of “Streamline” took a village of talented people as well as a global fan-base to pay for the duplication costs, art work, publishing, recording, mixing, mastering, and of course promotion.

Frankly, if you kicked in on this project you can rest assured that you played a part in unearthing a piece of Colorado music gold. If you missed out, there’s still plenty of time to find out why Cary Morin is one of Colorado’s most loved musicians at home and abroad.

Find an upcoming show and get on the mailing list for the CD Release date (June 1) at CaryMorin.com.

KRFC MusicShare: Better Than Bacon

We are closing in on the 10th Annual KRFC Birthday Bash, April 6th, as well as Local Music Appreciation Month throughout April. All of this activity is giving us a big appetite—for bacon local music. Let’s take a break to appreciate some FoCo-fried greasy rock and soul.

This Fort Collins band moves the Rocky Mountains with a throwback formula: passionate performances featuring scorching electric guitar, well-crafted songs with substance and soul, and a thumping rhythm section to match any mood.

Better Than Bacon runs the rock ‘n’ roll gauntlet: the reckless free-for-all drive of Led Zeppelin and Nirvana, the variety and high-octane jamming of The Band and The Allman Brothers, and the songwriting refinement of the masters, all mashed together with the hip-swaying spirit of Motown and the Blues.

A dynamic vocal pairing – one that marries Ryan Zwanziger’s powerful, textured vocals with James Yearling’s smooth, velvety voice – is complimented by Yearling’s expressive and explosive electric guitar playing. An impromptu jam session between the two sparked the duo to form Better Than Bacon as a four-piece band with drums and bass as a platform for their “Greasy Rock ‘n’ Roll with Old Soul!”

The band’s self-titled album, Better Than Bacon, showcases Yearling and Zwanziger’s collaborative spirit through ten signature Bacon tunes, from the snappy, radio-friendly rock of, “Letter,” to “Bread’s the Fruit,” the album’s emotional 10-minute closing track. Old Soul oozes from the muted horns and gospel organ of “Missin’” and “Into the Country,” while aggressive and funky downhill rockers “Like the Weather,” and “Glasses Full” launch into sonic explosions.

Nearly three years and 300 shows later, the band’s “hard-hat” work ethic and boiling brew of tunes has caught the statewide attention of numerous promoters, venues, and media outlets, as well as earned the respect of their peers.

The band is thrilled to be a SpokesBUZZ class of 2013 band, shining a light on Northern Colorado at each show and on every tour stop, including the SpokesBUZZ showcase at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, TX.

With another self-produced album in the works, a constant performance schedule, and another national tour in the works, be rest assured that Better Than Bacon will be keeping it greasy!

KRFC MusicShare: Michael Kirkpatrick

Please forgive the free-form nature of this week’s MusicShare post. It came together this morning during a 17 hour drive home from covering a slice of Colorado’s presence at SXSW Music in Austin, TX. I promise this post only meanders a little before arriving at a free download of something brand new and great.

Perhaps no other Northern Colorado artist can claim the notoriety of a one Michael Kirkpatrick. If you ask somebody for a bluegrass concert recommendation in Ft. Collins they will likely steer you to his band, The Holler!—which is completely disconcerting because although he does play mandolin (not ukelele) the similarities end there.

I had never met him when I started at KRFC, but over the last few music-packed years our paths have crossed countless times. I suspect some day I’ll get a call from 20th Century Fox asking me to consult for his biopic about what they will hopefully call “the NoCo years.” I suggest that title because Michael’s life in this community has seen him rise from playing guitar in bands and throwing parties in barns to performing on multiple instruments, building a stellar solo set, leading bands, arranging, playing studio sessions for national artists, and all the while camouflaging his operatic performance training, an asset that makes him an ideal contemporary showman.

Doubtless, the folks who hail The Holler!’s driving rock rhythm and “mid-tempo psychedelia” as NoCo’s best bluegrass will soon be sending audiences Michael’s way to enjoy some of his signature Colorado folk music. This is where I must implore you as an informed reader of this blog and/or a listener of KRFC to end the madness. Kirkpatrick’s Seattle indie-pop heritage shines through every time he steps on stage with The Holler! and on each and every track of “Key To My Cage,” To discount his unabashed love affair with and flair for melancholy rock arrangements is a crime.

So, with great excitement, I share a track that first debuted to an audience of a handfull of friends and colleagues gathered for the holidays in a cozy South Fort Collins living room. After more than a year of cajoling by Michael’s solo acoustic audience, that night was the first hint for many that a new recording would be in the works. After a little tuning and a few unanswered refrains of “What should I play, what should I play” there was a pregnant pause as his breath dropped in and our little gathering leaned forward in our seats. Yours truly, half way in to the poetic and melancholy masterpiece (already full of the holiday spirit and overjoyed by this early present) began to well up with tears as I thought back on some of the bitter struggles so many in our community faced last year between drought, fire and whatever the city has going on down Mason Street (I just close my eyes and pray when I have to bike across now). By the end of the song, the mix of joy in our hearts and the plaintive performance had the tissue box circulating around the room.

So, if you’re feeling sensitive at the moment, you’ve been warned about this track. It’s a soaring roller-coaster ride with a gentle ending that will make you want to hit repeat.
