Not only will Ivory Drive be playing, but lead singer Van Wampler’s short film, “Tequila Snowfall” will also be showcased. With high energy tunes and creative tempo changes, Alternative Rock might best describe Ivory Drive’s music. Ivory Drive’s five musicians combine on piano, organ, drums, bass, trumpet, and sax to produce songs that are unusually complex for “rock” music, peppered with jazz, folk, blues, world, and even classical. more >>>

Stud Mushroom is known for writing and recreating songs in an original and “make-you-want-to-dance” approach to music. Taking influence from the likes of Bob Marley, Sublime, Led Zeppelin, and Modest Mouse, Stud Mushroom has built a foundation on their catchy and original combination of reggae, funk, and classic rock. The band’s lineup — vocalists Austin Gloss, guitarists Jeremy Marmor and Adam Petty, bassist Drew Miller, and drummer Jonah Greene — was cemented throughout the musicians’ high-school tenure and finalized in 2011. A form of the band originated in 2006 with Jonah Greene and Adam Petty, and further evolved in 2010 when Jeremy Marmor and Drew Miller were introduced through the Academy of Guitar. Vocalist Austin Gloss finalized the project and brought Stud Mushroom full circle. more >>>

If you’ve followed Tony Furtado’s prolific music career at all you won’t be surprised to know that his 15th album, Golden, is loaded with several impressive firsts. For the first time, he has self-produced and penned every track. It is also the first time his own artwork- a sculpture of a two-headed rabbit- has been featured on the cover. However, on what is arguably his most engaging, masterful recording to date, one first marks this album more than any other. After 20 years of recording, touring basically living on the road, it is the first time Furtado has ever recorded an album in the town that he calls home.

Recorded, mixed and co-produced by friend and engineer Rob Stroup at 8-Ball Studio in Portland, OR, Golden, is the product of Furtado surrounded by the comforts of home, weaving his way through the diverse cultural fabric of a city rich with music, art and talent. In classic Furtado fashion, he explores the hills and valleys of familiar and new musical territory ranging from Americana, Celtic and folk to indie rock and pop. And while his award-winning playing and unforgettable leads are present throughout, it is his vocal presence, diverse arrangements and songwriting that take center stage on Golden. more >>>

3/10 KRFC’s 9th Annual Birthday Bash

For 9 years our community has come together under the call-sign 88.9FM KRFC to create and support great non-commercial radio that fosters deeper connections throughout the community and creates a sense of place.

Over those 9 years Northern Colorado has evolved and enjoyed a rise in major national press for the new generation of musicians and music industry professionals making the front range their home. Likewise, KRFC’s format has evolved with the times to offer our increasingly savvy community more local music, news and entertainment than ever before. With all this in mind, KRFC has booked an unprecedented local line-up to celebrate the friends and neighbors who have worked together to build a buzz-worthy scene and a one-of-a-kind community radio station.

Ben Taylor, son of James Taylor and Carly Simon, returns to Colorado March 10th to headline the 9th Annual KRFC Birthday Bash with additional performances by 2011 local chart-topping artists, John Common and Blinding Flashes of Light, Fierce Bad Rabbit, and Danielle Ate the Sandwich. Martin Gilmore (of Long Road Home) and brilliantly gifted youth-musician Jaden Carlson round out the bill, which kicks off at 5:30pm. All in all, the cost of admission ($20 up to the week of the show; $88.99 VIP) includes a festival-style line up featuring 5 Colorado bands in the newly-renovated Lincoln Center.

Tickets are available now through the Lincoln Center box office, (970) 221-6730 or online.

Ben Taylor

The son of James Taylor and Carly Simon, Ben Taylor’s life was always centered on music, although he spent several years traveling the world, developing a deep appreciation for the earth and the outdoors. Taylor’s acclaimed previous releases include his debut album, Famous Among the Barns, and Another Run Around The Sun, which was hailed on BBC Radio 2 as “LP of the Week.” All have been released on Iris Records, owned and run by Taylor and industry veteran/musician, Larry Ciancia. It’s a place where the duo is able to control their artistic decisions and create opportunities for other like-minded artists. Ben has performed on such national television shows as Good Morning America, The Tonight Show, The CBS Morning Show, Last Call with Carson Daly, and was featured on an A&E Biography profile as well as on the Howard Stern radio show. He also made his acting debut with a recurring role on NBC’s American Dreams as Cal, a struggling singer/songwriter. Taylor has been featured in countless magazines including People Magazine, Vogue and has even appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone. He has toured extensive for years with artists such as Blues Traveler, Sheryl Crow, Ziggy Marley and Dar Williams.

Taylor’s memorable melodies, immaculate acoustic guitar playing and insightful, honest lyrics have been captivating fans since the moment he embarked on this journey. Making music has become as natural as breathing to Taylor. Accordingly, this approach has colored his songwriting to create music that defies genre definitions. Taylor seamlessly merges the sounds and styles of rock, pop, folk and hip-hop. His albums often run the gamut from sonically spacious acoustic numbers to layered vocals, beats and unique samples. His honest music is led by what is often described as his tuneful and expressive voice, the kind of voice that makes its impact with the smallest turn of a whispered phrase.

John Common & Blinding Flashes of Light

After nearly quitting music, John Common made the best record of his life with his new band, Blinding Flashes of Light.  By then, Common had been playing music for two decades, beginning with his first high school band in Florida. After college, music took a backseat to corporate job that he abandoned after three years for life on the road a la Kerouac, a journey which took him from Vermont to Kansas. Eventually, Common landed in Denver, where he fronted the alt-country combo Rainville and released a pair of well-received solo albums [2006’s Good To Be Born and 2007’s Why Birds Fly]. By 2007, his creativity was tapped and Common wondered if it was time to just call it a career. But instead of stopping, Common just pressed on. And from the sounds of Beautiful Empty, the debut from his new band, John Common and Blinding Flashes of Light, it’s a good thing he did: Beautiful Empty is his best work yet.

Fierce Bad Rabbit

Fresh, energetic and intelligent, Fierce Bad Rabbit takes you on a journey so interesting that you don’t want it to ever end. From the opening notes of “Everything Is Alright”, the first track on their eponymous debut EP, you know you’re in for something new and captivating. Tight melodies and well-crafted lyrics delivered with disciplined passion by front man Chris Anderson, who also plays guitar and keyboards, combined with the powerful yet perfectly nuanced viola and supporting vocals of Alana Rolfe and the rock-solid rhythmic backbone of Dayton Hicks on bass and a newcomer, Max Barcelow, on drums to create a constantly changing but consistently fulfilling musical experience for the listener.

1/5/12 The First Byllynsgate Ball of 2012

Twice a month Lyric Cinema Cafe exhibits local musicians, local filmmakers, local artists, local brews, local food and a packed house of local friends new and old.

The first Byllynsgate Ball of 2012 features one of the area’s most polished Americana outfits, Finders and Youngberg. The group just began playing concerts again after taking a well-deserved break to bring a new baby Youngberg into the world. Many here at KRFC have missed them – and we look forward to making up for lost time with two complete sets (before and after the film screening).

This month’s films by Brian Hartley and Scott Schroeder have the staff at The Lyric buzzing with excitement (no small feat for these art-film impresarios).

Not to be missed is a special tapping from Grimm Brothers Brewhouse. You’ll quickly taste why Loveland beer enthusiasts are so pleased the Brewhouse expanded their production two and a half times over.

As always, it’s only $4!

KRFC Presents: SHEL w/ Patti Fiasco at Hodi’s

Colorado rocks in no small part thanks to the incredible talent of female-fronted genre-bending groups like SHEL and Patti Fiasco. KRFC is proud to present these two groups on the Hodi’s Half Note stage with a supporting set from local duo Rosewood Divine.

Friday, January 20th
Tickets $7 Day Of / $10 under 21 >>>
Doors at 8:00

SHEL is Sarah, Hannah, Eva and Liza, four classically trained musicians who happen to be sisters ranging in age from 18-23. From the artist colony of Fort Collins, Colorado, SHEL is sophisticated and youthful, emotional and lighthearted, classic and eccentric. SHEL’s engaging live show is marked with a prodigy’s creativity and a veteran’s instinct for entertaining. Audiences delight with their unique songwriting style and fresh, new sound.

The Holbrook sisters grew up in a musical household and first appeared on the stage backing their singer-songwriter father, Andrew Holbrook. In 2005, the girls collaborated to form SHEL and now play and write all of their own music. Their new EP, “ When the Dragon Came Down,” was co-produced by SHEL and six-time Grammy award-winner, Brent Maher. The band has attracted the attention of such major media outlets as NPR’s “eTown Live,” and ABC.com; toured nationwide playing fairs and festivals including South by Southwest, International Folk Alliance, Lilith Fair, Four Corners Folk Festival and Cornerstone; and had one of their songs featured in Glade’s Scented Oil Candles national TV ad campaign. Patti Fiasco. Now boasting two years of touring, writing, recording, and playing heart and face- melting shows together, this rare crew of Wyoming rockers is onto something special. Their Wyoming heritage and affinity for old-school country inspires an inevitable (and endearing) twang, though the Patti Fiasco still wears the pants of a rock and roll outfit. Frontwoman Alysia Kraft, “seething with talent and energy” (www.99thepoint.com) “has star quality pouring out of her.” (Sonic Reducer, Official Fanzine for the Rock and Roll Tribe). Veteran and versatile rockers Dee Tyler (guitar), Niles Mischke (bass), Scott Clabby (drums) shape the sound, and Ansel Foxley (electric dobro) makes a rock and roll weapon out of a roots instrument seldom electrified and incorporated in the rock and roll sound. With Kraft penning the tunes and the band fine-tuning structures and compositions, the Patti Fiasco puts forth songs with just enough twang, hook, pop sensibility, lyric savvy, and old school charm to bend genres and attract listeners from all sides of the musical spectrum. Their first full-length studio album, moments away from reaching the masses (set to release on June 30), is a testament to their versatility, a genre-bending and exuberant collection that loses none of the Patti Fiasco’s noteworthy live intensity in the studio polish. Rosewood Divine. Months after 2 cross country moves, new jobs, and new lives, Ali Paine and Shaefer Welch now call Fort Collins, CO home. Both leaving the mecca of the music industry in Nashville, TN behind, the two have brought their talents and styles together to form Rosewood Divine. After years of learning, writing, and playing, they both found themselves aspiring for a change. Paine, a native of Glenwood Springs, found that returning home to Colorado would be the most ideal location for continuing her music with a fresh start. Welch was soon to follow and in time, Rosewood Divine was in the beginning stages of a harmony driven duo. Welch brings a gritty acoustic country sound to complement the incredible voice and lyrically savvy Paine. Together the two have found a folky, harmony driven sound that reaches out to all. More >>>

KRFC Presents: Hayes Carll at the Mish

Hayes Carll is coming to the Mishawaka in support of his highly acclaimed 2011 release KMAG YOYO. This show, with an opening set from Robert Ellis, is presented by KRFC.

Hayes’ new album, which was nominated for two awards at the 10th annual American Honors and Music Awards, continues to receive widespread critical praise — The New York Times asserts, “…[Carll] extends a worthy Texas tradition: the weathered, hard-drinking, weary but clear-eyed troubadour…,” while Spin Magazine included him in their feature “The Next Big Things: 11 Artists You Must Hear in 2011,” calling him a “silver-tongue-in-cheek country iconoclast.” More >>>

The New York Times recently proclaimed that Houston, Texas native Robert Ellis sounds “equally inspired by Jackson Browne and George Jones.” Not a bad reference point for an artist only twenty-two years old. Ellis cut his teeth performing the songs of similar luminaries around town, most notably at the neighborhood beacon, Fitzgerald’s. His “Whiskey Wednesdays” at that club are regularly packed with punkish newcomers and graying locals sharing a mutual interest in artists ranging from Ray Price to Buck Owens to the Rolling Stones. Ellis has songwriting ability equal to his encyclopedic knowledge of these greats and it shines on his upcoming New West Records debut, Photographs, released in July. The young songwriter’s second release is an impressive and diverse concept album split between five breathtaking folk songs and five soon-to-be country standards. Listening to Photographs, one finds it difficult to pigeonhole Robert Ellis. It’s even harder to remember that he’s barely just begun. More >>>
