KRFC 88.9 FM Fort Collins is a community-based, not-for-profit radio station located in Fort Collins, Colorado, USA. The station is owned and operated by Public Radio for the Front Range and our programming is composed of a diverse group of volunteer DJs, whose genres are as distinctive as they are.
There’s something for everyone’s listening pleasure at KRFC 88.9 FM Radio Fort Collins, as we are not constrained by membership to major networks such as NPR or Pacifica. KRFC 88.9 FM Radio Fort Collins serves music and public affairs aficionados featuring an eclectic mix of in-person, broadcast and online programming. In so doing, KRFC 88.9 FM Radio Fort Collins operates an influential, listener-supported public radio station.
Not only do we feature a variety of musical genres—from rock to hip-hop, bluegrass to country, classical and so much more—our programming is a source of community-oriented information and cultural enrichment, as well. Focused on local, public affairs, we provide an information source for northern Colorado. Human interest stories, real-time news and public affairs programming provide a listening option to a world-wide audience.
Our facilities in the heart of The Music District in Fort Collins allows KRFC 88.9 FM Radio Fort Collins to host a wide variety of community events and produce hundreds of live performances—many of which are open to the public at no charge.
Public Radio for the Front Range (PRFR) was started by a group of former DJs out of KCSU-FM. Non-student DJs decided to relocate after KCSU-FM’s underwriter, Colorado State University, decided to make KCSU-FM solely student-run. In September 1995, PRFR was given IRS 501(C)(3) non-profit status.
By the summer of 1996, PRFR had applied for a construction permit for 88.9 MHz. After many hurdles, the PRFR group was finally able to make an agreement with other applicants, in order to receive 88.9 MHz. The agreement was then submitted to the FCC in 2002, and PRFR was granted a construction permit for a 3,000-watt non-commercial radio station. KRFC 88.9 FM Radio Fort Collins began broadcasting on March 1, 2003.
KRFC 88.9 FM Radio Fort Collins has grown leaps and bounds since then. In 2016, expanded studios were completed in an exciting new home within The Music District campus in Fort Collins. The new state of the art facilities feature four studios, which are all constructed with the ability to broadcast live. Welcoming office space, along with aesthetic surroundings, create a symbiotic relationship with for music-focused professionals.
